2nd Annual MHFGA Coyote Management Incentive Program

Posted on January 19 2026

The Medicine Hat Fish and Game Association (MHFGA), with equal funding support from the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS), is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Coyote Management Incentive Program.

The collapse of the coyote fur market has significantly reduced active coyote management across the region. As a result, coyote populations have grown beyond sustainable levels, leading to measurable negative impacts on agricultural livestock and wildlife prey species. This program is intended to help responsibly address that imbalance while recognizing the important role coyotes play in local ecosystems.

Program Overview

  • Incentive: $20.00 per coyote
  • Eligibility: Open to 2026 MHFGA members only
  • Funding: Jointly funded by APOS and MHFGA
  • Geographic Area: Cypress County only

Program Dates

  • February 1 to March 9, 2026, or until the allocated quota of coyotes has been reached, whichever comes first.
  • Once the quota is reached, the program will immediately conclude.

Participation Requirements

  • You must be a 2026 MHFGA member to participate.
  • Coyotes must be harvested legally, within Cypress County, and during the program period.
  • A maximum of 20 coyotes per regular or family membership will be paid out.

Registration Process

  • Coyotes harvested must be registered in real time.
  • Register by:
    • Messaging the Medicine Hat Fish and Game Facebook page, or
    • Emailing [email protected]
  • Registration must include:
    • Your name
    • The number of coyotes harvested that day
  • Every Facebook message or email registration will receive a response.
    • If you do not receive an acknowledgement, you must re-register.
  • Failure to register in real time may result in ineligibility if the quota is reached.
  • Please take photos of coyotes harvested each day. Photos do not have to be submitted by default, however they must be made available if requested.

Proof of Harvest & Payment

  • Proof of harvest is required by presenting coyote tails.
    • Please package tails together to allow for easy counting.
    • Coyote tails must be removed with the tail bone in.
  • Payment Amount: $20.00 per coyote tail
    • A maximum of 20 coyotes per regular or family membership will be paid out.
  • Date & Time for Proof and Payment:
    March 10, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Location:
Gas City Kiwanis Centre Parking Lot
    826 – 11th Street SE
    Medicine Hat, Alberta
  • Important:
    • Incentive payments will only be made at this time and location.

Program Statement

APOS and MHFGA respect and understand the important role coyotes play in local ecosystems. For this reason, the program has been carefully limited in scope and duration. However, when coyote populations grow beyond sustainable levels, they can negatively affect both wildlife populations and agricultural livestock. This program responds to those current impacts in a responsible and regulated manner.

Memberships

MHFGA 2026 Memberships can be purchased online here, at the January 24, 2026 Horn Scoring Day, or at the Outdoorsman.
